Denver diabetes organizations arrange for Downtown Denver buildings to display blue lights in support of type 1 diabetes on November 14th, World Diabetes DaynnThe Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) and several diabetes organizations in the Denver area will honor World Diabetes Day on November 14th and have arranged for several iconic buildings in downtown Denver to display blue lights, the official color of diabetes. Throughout the month of November, CDF is working to raise community awareness about type 1 diabetes (formerly known as childhood, juvenile or insulin-dependent diabetes) to continue its work to find a cure for the disease.nn”A type 1 diabetes diagnosis means everything will change for the patient and their whole family. It takes constant management and can become exhausting over time physically, emotionally and financially, especially when every meal, exercise, and stressor can affect blood sugar levels day and night,” said Dana Davis, Executive Director of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. “Diabetes Awareness Month is the perfect time to spread education and awareness for this disease so that the rest of the world can learn what life with type 1 diabetes is really like.”nnDiabetes Awareness Month is observed every November throughout America, to focus the nation’s attention on the disease and those affected by it. Similarly, World Diabetes Day was created by the International Diabetes Foundation in 1991 as a way to raise awareness about important issues in the diabetes world. It is the largest diabetes campaign in the world, reaching over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries.nnDenver is observing the day this year by displaying blue lights on several iconic buildings, some of which include the Pepsi Center, the Daniels & Fisher Clock Tower (16th and Arapahoe), and the City & County Building (Civic Center Park).nnDiabetes is an autoimmune disease that afflicts over 30 million people in the United States, about 1.25 million of whom have its most severe form, type 1 diabetes. Approximately 40,000 people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes every year and this number continues to rise.
