A CAMPAIGN TO CURE DIABETES

help

In America, every day, 35 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes -- more than one child every hour.  In fact, one in three babies born today will have diabetes in their lifetime.  We need your support of our annual CAMPAIGN FOR THE CURE to keep them well.  It is a race against time to stop this worldwide epidemic, and every donation counts.

Diabetes is a silent killer.  People afflicted with this disease may look healthy, but diabetes takes a terrible toll on nearly every organ system.  Its most severe form, type 1 diabetes, primarily strikes in childhood and demands daily, multiple injections of insulin or pump therapy to survive, as well as blood testing throughout the day.  Insulin therapy, combined with proper nutrition and exercise, improve the chances of avoiding the devastating complications of blindness, kidney failure, loss of limb, stroke and heart disease.  However, healthy diabetes management is not a guarantee to avoid complications.  All children and adults with diabetes dream of a cure.

The Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes (BDC) is the leading worldwide center for children and adults with type 1 diabetes.  Your donations to our annual REACHING FOR THE BRASS RING:  A CAMPAIGN FOR THE CURE support our commitment to give all BDC patients the same high quality care.  No child is turned away.  Insulin, supplies and clinic visits can cost up to $800 or more a month -- a financial burden for any family, impossible for the uninsured and impoverished.  Through your gifts we provide treatment and supplies to nearly 30% of the BDC’s patients who otherwise could not afford it.

At diagnosis our Clinical team works 24/7 with the children and their families teaching them how to manage and cope with this chronic illness so they may lead relatively normal lives.  There are 23 doctors, 13 nurse educators, 5 dietitians, 4 nurse practitioners, 3 social workers and 1 pharmacist on the Clinical team.  The BDC then provides ongoing care and assists with preventing complications for children and adults through its Cardiovascular, Eye, Pump Initiation and Pregnancy Clinics.

The BDC’s world-renowned clinical and research programs include stem cell and islet cell transplant research, and testing for genetic and immunologic risk of diabetes.  Trials continue on a variety of agents, including a new vaccine trial to prevent diabetes in those children most genetically at-risk.

Please, help us catch the brass ring by supporting our CAMPAIGN FOR THE CURE.  When you help children with diabetes you empower them to create a better future for all.
